Homework
Monday- Thursday Read 20 minutes- free choice
Friday No Homework!!!
Why I assign homework: I believe homework is important because it is a valuable aid in helping students make the most of their experience in school. I assign homework because it is useful in reinforcing what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons, teaches responsibility and helps students develop positive study habits.
When homework is assigned: Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday nights. Assignments should take no longer than 30 minutes. Students must read a minimum of 30 minutes per night and discuss their book with their parents or Iread for 30 minutes. Why? Scholarly research has proven that students who are more fluent readers score higher on standardized tests, are achieving higher levels of educational achievement, and have higher vocational success. We typically have math homework throughout the week as well. Occasionally projects will be sent home to be completed. Math sheets and projects are the only items to be turned in.
Student’s homework responsibilities: I expect students to do their best job on their homework. I expect homework to be neat. Sloppy work will not be accepted. Students are to do the work on their own and be responsible for making up homework missed due to absence. I expect that all assignments will be turned in on time.
Parent’s homework responsibilities: Parents are the key to making homework a positive experience for their children. Therefore, I ask that you make homework a priority, provide necessary supplies and a quiet homework environment, give praise and support when needed, and contact me if you have questions. I ask that you review and initial all completed homework. Please let your child be responsible for his/her homework. Please do not “rescue” your child if he/she leaves their work at home. Allow him/her to deal with the consequences.
Teacher’s homework responsibilities: I will check all homework and keep records of assignments as either completed or not completed. However, these are not graded assignments. Because I strongly believe in the value positive support plays in motivating children to develop good study habits, I will give students praise and other incentives when they do their homework. I do not give a second copy of assignments. I will differeinate assignents for students when needed.
If students do not complete homework: They will be required to bring in the item the next day. When there is a legitimate reason why a student is not able to finish an assignment, the parent must send a note stating the reason it was not completed. If the student fails to turn in their homework several weeks in a row they will be asked to complete it during independent work time on Friday to complete their homework.
NOTE: I try to send home work that can be completed by your child with minimal support. If your child has been trying their absolute hardest and they are super frustrated when they are trying to complete a math sheet please stop after 20 minutes and write me note. I will help support them on that work when they get to school the next day.
How to Support Reading:
I expect each student to read for 30 minutes and then to talk to an adult about what they read. I have provided some questions to help kick start the book conversation...
What was the book about?
What is the main idea?
What did you like or dislike about the book?
What did you think of the illustrations?
Was there anything that made you stop and think?
Who were the characters and what were they doing?
Does this book or anything in it remind you of anything?
Would you read another book about this topic or by this author?
How would you solve a problem from the story?
Would you change anything about this book?
What kind of book will you choose next time?
Did this book have a moral or lesson?
Was this book persuasive, informative, or entertaining?
Would you recommend someone else to read this book...why?
Did you see any interesting text features or language in this book?
Can you retell the story to me?
Can you recall any facts from an informative book to me?
At first you may need to prod to get more than one word answers! Ask why, how, etc. Reading is more impactful when we stop and think about the book before, during, and after we read!
Feel free to mix up if your child reads alone in their head, alone out loud, listening to a story online, or shared reading. Homework shouldn't be tedious and reading only one way can get boring. However, mixing it up is exciting!
Reading a variety of types of books can also help keep reading exciting. Options: fiction, nonfiction, comic books, poetry books, etc.
